The Israel Museum, Jerusalem is Israel's National Museum. Founded in 1956, the Israel Museum, Jerusalem was extensively extended and refurbished reopening in 2010. The focus of the museum is on the art, Judaica and ancient artifacts of the Land of Israel and beyond, with the museum holding some 500,000 artefacts, with 7,000 on active display. The Israel Museum devoted time and space to photography exhibitions almost immediately after opening in 1965. In the spirit of this ongoing commitment, a decision was made in the 1970s to establish an independent photography department— a pioneering act at a time when very few art museums in the world had that vision.
