How can i stop adverts popping up

I've had pop-up disabled but that didn't stop the ads from appearing. Also, I use Norton 360 and is running smoothly and is up to date. I've ran full system scans and all looks good. I get a notice quite often, the it has blocked something and that there is no action required. Norton 360 also performs a tune up as well. What else is there to do?
